Is it Time for a New Mattress?

“If it’s over eight, it’s time to replace.” You may have heard this in regards to when to your replace your mattress, meaning if it’s over eight years old, it’s time to replace it. This is a great rule of thumb, as many mattresses have not only lost their structural integrity, but have also gained some weight in the way of sweat, dead skin cells, and dust mites. However, it might not be exactly eight years when you notice that you need a new mattress. Here are some other signs:

You aren’t as rested as you once were

This is a subjective test, but if you are continually waking up tired and your lifestyle hasn’t drastically changed, it is probably time for a new mattress. As we age, our sleep needs change, so what we need in a mattress changes, too. Investing in the right mattress for your sleep needs will pay off in every aspect of your life.

Your mattress is saggy

This one may be obvious, but it can sometimes be hard to notice how much your mattress has changed since you first purchased it. If there is a permanent imprint of your body, then this is an obvious giveaway. If you always end up in the middle of your mattress regardless are where you start the night, this is another telltale sign.

You wake up stiff and sore

If you are sleeping poorly, this can contribute to aches and pains throughout the body. You may think that it’s just part of getting older or that you somehow did something during the day to cause pain. More than likely, your mattress is not providing the support your body needs throughout the night to achieve a restful sleep and in turn making your discomfort worse.

Your allergies or asthma are getting worse

If you have no other explanation for an increase in allergy and asthma symptoms, then your mattress may be to blame. Mattresses are notorious for collecting dust mites. The protein in dust mite feces may cause allergic reactions and asthma attacks and so can the dust that accumulates in your mattress. Vacuuming, steaming, and flipping your mattress might reduce dust and mites to ease your symptoms. If these steps don’t help, a new mattress might be the solution.
